Membrane Fire Test:

Sopralene Flam FR Granules is classified Class A for fire test exposure according to the rigorous procedures laid down by Underwriter's Laboratories of Canada CAN/ULC-S107-M87 (see PDF below for complete details).

Class A classification means that the FR membrane is effective against severe fire exposures, is not readily flammable, affords a fairly high degree of fire protection to the roof deck, does not slip from position and is not expected to produce flying brands.

The FLYING BRAND TEST is performed when there is a possibility that the roof membrane will break into flaming particles which support combustion. The powerful gas flame and air current is applied for 10 minutes, then air only until clear.

The first photograph in the series which follows shows the BURNING BRAND TEST where 36 burning lumps of Douglas Fir are placed in a regular pattern on the Wrimco SBS previously torch applied to a timber frame. The "brands" are ignited and then held in place on the waterproofed membrane by the wires you see. Air is blown across until the "brands" are totally consumed by fire.

The subsequent photographs illustrate the INTERMITTENT FLAME TEST where the flame is ON for 2 minutes and then OFF for 2 minutes. This is repeated 15 times. Class A materials have to withstand this treatment without disintegration or burning.

The SPREAD OF FLAME TEST has the gas flame and air blasting continuously for 10 minutes.

These tests are obviously designed to simulate the conditions likely to be encountered during a fire. The aim is to ensure that the roof membrane does not ignite or burst into flames.
